About the offer

About the destination

Zreče is the youngest town in Slovenia and is located in the eastern part, below the Pohorje hills in the Dravinja valley. In addition to its natural attractions, Zreče boasts a rich cultural and historical heritage. The first traces of settlement in the Zreče area date back almost 4,000 years, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds on Brinjeva Gora and Gračič. The first written records of these places in the Middle Ages date back to the end of the 10th century. The first written mention of Zreče is from 1206, when a document was signed in which Rupert of Zreče (Ruberto de Reetsach) appeared as a witness. The most important of the castles was once Freudenberg Castle, which stood on a hill below Brinjeva gora and was first mentioned in 1224. The parish church of St. Aegidius in Zreče was first mentioned in 1375, while its branches, St. Martin, St. Neža and St. Mother of God, were built in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the Middle Ages, the landowners in and around Zreče were also the Carthusians of Žiče. The Carthusian monastery in Žiče is an ancient monastery of great cultural and historical value from the 12th century, located about 16 km from Zreče. Coal mining appeared in the Zreče area already in the first half of the 19th century. The most important coal mine in the area was Radana vas, to which the railway was brought from Konjice in 1903. The first train arrived at the Zreče railway station, where the Poljčane - Zreče Railway Museum is located today, on 15 January 1921; the line was closed on 15 April 1962. The 300-year-old forge in Ošlak bears witness to the early development of metal crafts in the area. The industrial expansion of metalworking began in 1925. A number of museums can be visited in Zreče; the Museum of the Poljčane - Slovenske Konjice - Zreče Railway Line, the Ošlak Forge Museum, the Old Skomarje House and others.
