About the destination: Easily reachable from Catania, Ragusa, capital of the same named province, is a nice town set on multiple hills of the Hyblaean Mountains. Ragusa, a modern city with a beautiful historic core, is known for some great local red wines and its wonderful cheese, the Ragusano. The city is divided in two parts the old Ragusa Ibla and new Ragusa. Old Ragusa was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693, and it preserves an important sample of baroque architecture. Ragusa's historic centre is quite magnificent with its tangled alleyways, grey stone houses and baroque palazzi. In this part of town we find the Duomo di San Giorgio. With its large neo-Classical dome lit by blue stained-glass windows and surrounded by Corinthian columns, the church can be distinguished from afar. Close up, it is the superb flight of stairs which attracts the visitor's eye to the elegant and harmonious pink façade. Pretty sculpted motifs decorate the doorway and enhance the depiction of St George slaying the dragon with his lance. Alongside the church is the small Museo del Duomo, a museum containing stone statues and reliefs from the original pre-earthquake San Giorgio and other churches, architectural drawings by Gagliardo, some extravagant reliquaries and gloomy religious paintings. Ragusa Ibla has a large number of trattorias and restaurants, bars, coffee shops, pubs and clubs. Representing the modern Ragusa we have the Marina di Ragusa a famous seaside resort, with long beaches of golden sand, where you can find restaurants and busy clubs and lounge bars that are popular with tourists and locals alike. Ragusa offers many options to enjoy La Dolce Vita.
