Herning is a Danish city located in the centre of the Jutland peninsula and the capital of the municipality of the same name, in the region of Central Jutland. It currently has a population of just over 46,000 inhabitants.[citation needed] Herning is located in an area with a population of just over 1,000,000. Herning is located in an area of heathland characterised by traditional wool production and a textile industry. Although it has modest origins in the Middle Ages, the town developed until the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, making it a young town with no historic buildings. Herning is, in terms of population, the fourth largest city in the region of Central Jutland and the eleventh largest in the country.
